Thai PM vows to introduce stricter gun laws after eight killed in shooting

In the aftermath of a tragic shooting incident in Bangkok's outskirts, Thailand's Prime Minister has pledged to implement stringent gun control measures. The incident, carried out by a 14-year-old, resulted in the loss of eight lives and 22 injuries. The young attacker first killed his grandparents in their shared residence and then proceeded to the Debsirin School in Nonthaburi, where he was a student. At the school, he targeted five teachers before taking his own life. Subsequent reports from Thai media indicated that another student succumbed to their injuries. In a post-attack statement, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul outlined his intention to introduce legislation that would significantly limit the public carrying of firearms. The proposed law would permit only government officials on duty to possess guns. A Thai police colonel, Thadsakorn Konthong, revealed that the firearm and ammunition used in the attack were owned by the teenager's grandfather. An initial examination of the scene indicated that the weapon had been searched for within the grandfather's bedroom. Both international and local media outlets have reported that the gun was legally registered and had the necessary permit. Thailand is home to one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia, with an estimated 10. 3 million firearms in civilian hands, of which approximately four million are believed to be held illegally. While the country enforces strict gun laws, which penalize the illegal possession of arms with sentences of up to ten years in prison, the enforcement of these laws has been a matter of concern.
