Thai PM vows to introduce stricter gun laws after eight killed in shooting

Thailand's Prime Minister has promised to bring in new gun control measures following a tragic shooting incident near Bangkok. A teenager, just 14 years old, shot and killed his grandparents at their home and then traveled to Debsirin School in Nonthaburi. He was a student there. At the school, he shot and killed five teachers before ending his own life. Another student also succumbed to their injuries later. After the incident, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced his intention to introduce new laws that would limit the carrying of guns in public places. These new rules would only permit government officials on duty to carry firearms. A police colonel, Thadsakorn Konthong, revealed that the gun and bullets used in the attack were owned by the teenager's grandfather. An initial examination showed that the firearm had been searched for inside the grandfather's bedroom. Both international and local media have reported that the gun was legally registered and had the necessary permit. Thailand has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia, with an estimated 10. 3 million firearms in civilian hands, around four million of which are thought to be owned illegally. While the country has strict gun laws that can result in up to 10 years in prison for illegal possession, enforcing these laws has been challenging.
