Thailand's prime minister has promised to bring in new gun control laws after a teenager shot and killed eight people and injured 22 in Bangkok. The 14-year-old first killed his grandparents at their home and then went to Debsirin School, where he was a student. There, he shot five teachers before ending his own life. Another student also died from their injuries. After the incident, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he wants to make new laws that limit carrying guns in public. These laws would only allow government workers on duty to carry them. A Thai student said he was standing in front of his teacher when she was shot. Police Colonel Thadsakorn Konthong said the gun and bullets used were from the teenager's grandfather. The police found signs that the gun had been searched for in the grandfather's bedroom. Both international and local media said the gun was legally registered and had a permit. Thailand has many guns among its people, with about 10. 3 million in civilian hands. About four million of these are thought to be owned without permission. The country has strict laws against illegal gun possession, with penalties up to 10 years in prison. However, enforcing these laws has been a problem.
