How to exercise safely in hot weather
High temperatures can pose a threat to our long-term health by discouraging physical activity, scientists caution. Here are some tips to stay active during hot weather. Maintaining an active lifestyle in hot conditions can be difficult. This is why the players in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the US, Canada, and Mexico, are receiving extra, albeit controversial, hydration breaks at the 22-minute mark of each half. With the arrival of record-breaking temperatures this summer due to the strong El Niño weather pattern, exercising may become particularly challenging. Enduring a run or a football match in extreme heat can be not only uncomfortable but also risky, increasing the risk of heatstroke. "Walking, cycling, exercising outdoors, and even daily commutes on foot become more physically demanding and less comfortable when temperatures rise," explains Christian García-Witulski, an environmental lifestyle epidemiologist at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina. However, if we reduce our physical activity every time the heat becomes too intense for outdoor exercise, it may lead to long-term health risks.
