Hello and welcome to The English We Speak, where we explain phrases and expressions used by fluent English speakers so that you can use them too. I'm Feifei.

大家好,欢迎收听《英语我们说》,在这里我们解释熟练的英语使用者使用的短语和表达,以便你们也能使用它们。我是Feifei。
And I'm Phil.
显示翻译
我是Phil。
What are you working on there, Phil?
显示翻译
Phil,你那边在忙什么呢?
I've been putting together a business idea. Mail-order coffee.
显示翻译
我一直在构思一个商业点子。邮购咖啡。
What's that?
显示翻译
那是什么意思?
Yeah, you could have an app, and then when you fancy a coffee, you press a button, and someone makes you one and sends it to you through the post.
显示翻译
嗯,你可以有一个应用程序,然后当你想喝咖啡的时候,你按一个按钮,然后有人为你制作一杯并通过邮寄送给你。
I think that's the worst business idea I've ever heard! In fact, I'd say that's a complete non-starter.
显示翻译
我觉得这是我听过的最糟糕的商业点子!事实上,我会说那是一个彻头彻尾的失败者。
Maybe you're right. I'll have to think of something else. In the meantime, let's look at that expression 'non-starter'. Can you explain it, Feifei?
显示翻译
也许你是对的。我必须想出其他的点子。同时,让我们看看那个表达‘非启动者’。你能解释一下,Feifei吗?
Yes, we describe something as a 'non-starter' if we think it has absolutely no chance of succeeding. I think a mail-order coffee business is pretty much guaranteed to fail – it's a non-starter.
显示翻译
是的,如果我们认为某件事完全没有成功的可能性,我们就把它描述为‘非启动者’。我认为邮购咖啡业务基本上注定要失败——那是一个非启动者。
It's an expression that we can use to talk about a business idea, but it's also something that can be about any plan, project or initiative. We often use the expression to say that something hasn't been approved.
显示翻译
这是一个我们可以用来谈论商业点子的表达,但它也可以是关于任何计划、项目或倡议的。我们经常使用这个表达来说明某件事还没有被批准。
Yes, so it's also what we use to reject a proposal. For example, 'I've seen your suggestions, but I'm sorry, that's a non-starter'. Let's listen to some other people using the expression 'non-starter'.
显示翻译
是的,所以我们也可以用它来拒绝一个提议。例如,‘我看了你的建议,但很抱歉,那是一个非启动者’。
I've got some friends who live in Scotland. They've invited me up to their house for Christmas, which is great, but they want me to go for a freezing cold swim in the sea on Christmas day, and that is a non-starter. You want me to leave at 6.30 in the morning for this hike? That's a non-starter! I pitched an idea at work to make a podcast series about monkeys learning English. My boss said it was a non-starter.
显示翻译
让我们听听其他人如何使用‘非启动者’这个表达。
We've been learning the expression 'non-starter' to mean a plan or idea that people think will definitely fail.
显示翻译
我有一些住在苏格兰的朋友。他们邀请我到他们家过圣诞节,这很好,但他们想在圣诞节那天让我在海里游泳,那是一个非启动者。你想让我早上6:30出发去徒步旅行?那是一个非启动者!我在工作中提出了一个关于猴子学习英语的播客系列的想法。我的老板说那是一个非启动者。
Yes. It might come from horse-racing, where a horse that just stays at the start line and refuses to run is described as a 'non-starter'. Literally, it didn't start the race.
显示翻译
我们已经学习了‘非启动者’这个表达,意思是人们认为肯定会失败的计划或想法。
OK. That's it for this programme but join us again next time. When it comes to ideas, learning English is definitely not a non-starter – and we have lots of different ways to help you!
显示翻译
是的。它可能来自赛马,如果一个马匹只是停在起跑线上拒绝奔跑,就会被描述为‘非启动者’。字面上,它没有开始比赛。
See you next time!
显示翻译
好的。这就是本节目的全部内容,但下次再和我们一起。当谈到想法时,学习英语绝对不是一个非启动者——我们有很多不同的方式来帮助你!
Bye bye!
