Green Spaces, Safety Linked to Better Sleep
Trees and plants make our cities look nice. But studies show that green areas can be good for our health. Now, some researchers say that green streets can help us sleep better at night! Researchers in Japan wanted to see if how a neighborhood looks could affect the sleep of adults living on the third floor or lower. The study included about 1,100 working adults aged 40 to 59, who lived in Tokyo. The team used a computer to look at more than 200,000 pictures from Google Street View of where these people lived. They found out what was there, like trees and buildings. The computer said how "green" and "easy to walk in" each area was. It also thought about how "safe" each place felt. The people in the study told about their sleep. Then, the team matched this to the pictures. The researchers found that streets with more trees and buildings made better sleep. They also found that greener areas felt safer, and people in safer areas slept longer. But, surprisingly, streets that were easy to walk around, with more sidewalks and signs, made shorter sleep times. The researchers said this might be because these streets are busy. This can make some people feel unsafe or not relaxed, which can affect their sleep. The researchers said the study shows how the design of our neighborhoods can affect our sleep. They hope their study can help future research and city planning.
