Your Gut May Affect Your Response to Stress — Study
Stress Can Affect Your Stomach — New Research Research shows that stress can cause stomach problems. People with stress often have tummy trouble. Also, there is a link between bad things happening and having stomach issues later in life. Researchers in Germany and Austria think the brain and stomach can affect each other. Your stomach has many tiny creatures that make a special place inside you. This is called the gut microbiome. New research says these creatures might help your body deal with stress. The researchers looked at the stomach bugs of 74 healthy people. They put some in a stressful situation and others in a calm one. In the stressful situation, they had to do hard math problems and were told they were not good enough. The researchers checked the people's spit for a stress hormone called cortisol. The people also said how much they felt stressed. The results showed that people with more types of stomach bugs felt more stressed. Their cortisol levels went up faster when they were stressed. The study says the stomach and brain talk to each other. People with more kinds of stomach creatures might react more strongly to stress. This might not be bad. It could help in situations that need quick thinking. A more varied stomach creature mix could mean someone can change how they deal with stress. They might use their strong reaction to focus on their stress. Many things can change how people feel stress, like family, friends, and personality. The scientists say more research is needed. But this study gives a new idea about how the stomach and brain are connected.
